The 2012 edition of the International Wind Band Contest "City of Valencia" begins as we can still hear the echoes of last year's unforgettable 125th anniversary celebrations. This new edition, with 22 ensembles and bands from Valencia, the rest of Spain, Italy and Belgium, will feature a repertoire across the four divisions that will delight music-lovers.
Music, an expression of culture native to this land, our land, reflects the enthusiasm and solidarity of our people, virtues which are particularly appreciated in hard times such as these. Consequently, events such as the International Contest offer a welcome change to our society through a universal and common medium, music.
Celebrating the effort, professionalism and good work of our musicians through this artistic event allows us to value the quality of our ensembles, composers and performers. All this - together with the musical vocation of the city, which is one of its most prized values - has made the Contest famous all over the world for its combination of tradition, prestige and modernity.
For another year we are able to host and enjoy this International Contest within the program of the Valencia July Fair, the perfect setting for this annual event for both musicians and music-lovers.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to give a warm welcome to all the wind bands which have come from outside Valencia to take part in each of the contest divisions, and I hope they enjoy their time with us.
