ANTÓN GARCÍA ABRIL

Antón García Abril was born in Teruel on 19 May 1933.

Music, his great passion, has become his way of life.

He taught various generations of composers in his time as Head of Composition at the Madrid Royal Superior Conservatory of Music (from 1974 to 2003).

His repertoire is vast: opera, ballets, cantatas, orchestral works, chamber music, concertos, works for piano and guitar, and many more. His other great passion, poetry, has led him to write music for more than a hundred songs whose lyrics are by the greatest poets. He has had great success in composing music for theater, cinema and television.

His motto: "Culture is freedom", says a lot about his personality; he has respect for all the arts and is generous when making judgments, affirming and confirming that all arts are necessary as long as they demonstrate a perfect balance between musical technique and intuition.

From 1974 to 2003 he gave classes in his position as Head of Composition and Musical Form at the Madrid Royal Superior Conservatory of Music.

He is currently the Director of the "Manuel de Falla" Department in Cádiz. He also teaches Composition at the Galicia Advanced Music School and at the "Music in Compostela" summer courses.

He has been awarded the most prestigious honors and prizes, including:
  • The National Music Prize.
  • The Guerrero Foundation Prize.
  • The Tomas Luis de Victoria Iberoamerican Music Award.
  • The Aragón Prize.
  • The Fine Arts Gold Medal.
  • The Great Cross of Alfonso X El Sabio.
  • He has been awarded the Music Prize from the Association of Authors and Editors (SGAE) and the Association of Performers on several occasions.
  • The Orfeón Donostiarra / Universidad País Vasco Prize.
  • The Gold Medal from the Madrid Royal Superior Conservatory of Music.
  • The "Barón de Forna" Prize.
  • The Culture Prize, in the music category, from the Region of Madrid.
  • He is an elected member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid.
  • He is an honorary member of the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares Arts Faculty.
  • He has honorary doctorates from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid and the Havana Universidad de las Artes.
  • He is Vice President of the Artistic Teaching Council of the Ministry of Education.
The musicologist Alvaro Zaldivar said: "He is one of the most performed and loved Spanish composers; he has an unmistakable style which seduces its musicians, fascinates those who hear it and amazes those who analyze it."

He is still working today, dividing his time between commissions, lecturing and giving master classes.
