LORENZO PALOMO
Lorenzo Palomo is one of the most internationally-renowned contemporary Spanish composers. His works have brought him considerable success both in Spain and abroad. His music has been performed in the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall (New York), Symphony Hall (Boston), Covent Garden (London), Suntory Hall (Tokyo), Tchaikovsky Auditorium (Moscow), Konzerthaus (Berlin), Victoria Hall (Geneva), Konzerthus (Oslo), Accademia di Santa Cecilia (Rome), Auditorio Nacional (Madrid), L'Auditori (Barcelona), Palau de la Música (Valencia), Teatro de la Maestranza (Seville), Palacio Euskalduna (Bilbao), Auditorio Manuel de Falla (Granada) and many others.
A native of Pozoblanco (Córdoba), he started his musical education at the Córdoba Conservatory of Music before going on to the Barcelona Superior Conservatory of Music, where he studied Composition with Joaquín Zamacois and Piano with Sofía Puche de Mendlewicz. Awarded a scholarship from the Juan March Foundation, he studied Orchestra Direction in New York with Boris Goldovsky.
In 1973 he was appointed principal conductor of the Valencia Symphony Orchestra and during this phase in his career he directed opera and concerts in Spain and abroad. In 1976 he directed in Geneva, leading l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in a concert commemorating the centenary of Manuel de Falla. His years as an orchestra conductor helped him to develop and mature his own style as a composer, while his work as a conductor gave him an in-depth knowledge of the resources of an orchestra.
Among the orchestras which have performed Lorenzo Palomo's compositions are the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Opera Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, the Suisse Romande Orchestra (Geneva), the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestras of RAI (Turin) and of the Accademia Santa Cecilia (Rome), the Philharmonic Orchestras of Bergen and Oslo, the Symphony Orchestras of Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Phoenix, San Diego and North Carolina, the New Russia Philharmonic Orchestra (Moscow), the Cuban National Orchestra, the Spanish National Orchestra (with which he toured the United States in 2001) and the Symphony Orchestras of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao, Euskadi, Seville, Córdoba, Málaga and Granada, and the RTVE Symphony Orchestra.
Great choruses have also performed Lorenzo Palomo's works, such as the Chorus of the Berlin Opera (Deutsche Oper Berlin) and Spain's Orfeón Donostiarra.
His Majesty, King Juan Carlos I of Spain, has knighted Lorenzo Palomo into the Order of Isabel la Católica for his work in promoting Spain all over the world through his music.
Lorenzo Palomo lives in Berlin, where he was a member of the music staff of the Berlin Opera (Deutsche Oper Berlin) as an orchestra conductor and pianist from 1981 to 2004.
